The experience
The day starts with a 1.5-hour boat ride on the Bentota River, where you move through mangrove channels spotting crocodiles, water monitors and local birds. After that comes Galle Fort itself, a Portuguese-built fortification on the southwestern tip of the island that the Dutch and British later controlled. It's a UNESCO World Heritage site with streets you can walk, restaurants inside the walls, and views over the harbor that once anchored the region's spice trade for centuries.
Between the river and the fort, the tour includes stops at a gem museum and showroom, a Buddhist temple, and a sea turtle hatchery where you see how young turtles are raised before release. The tea plantation and factory visit happens later in the day. You walk through the growing areas and watch the processing before tasting what comes out of it. Lunch is provided, and your driver navigates the route while explaining what you're seeing. All entry fees, activity costs and transportation are already paid.
Pickup happens from your hotel in Colombo, Mt Lavinia, or the surrounding coastal towns: Negambo, Wadduwa, Kalutara, Beruwala, Bentota, Ahungalla, Hikkaduwa, Galle, Unawatuna, Talpe, Koggala, Ahangama, Weligama or Mirissa.
