The experience

The day starts at your chosen pickup point (airport, Kandy or Colombo), and heads toward Glenloch Tea Estate via a spice garden where you'll spend ten minutes learning about Sri Lankan herbal and natural spices. Around 27 kilometers north of Nuwara Eliya, the estate sits in terrain built for tea cultivation, and your guide takes you directly into the field to pluck leaves alongside the workers who do this daily. You use the same tools they use and work the same plants. There's no observation platform or demonstration version of the job.

From the field you move into the factory itself, where old UK machinery still runs the drying and packing processes. The guide walks you through each stage (how the leaves are dried, sorted and prepared for export), and explains the differences between Ceylon tea types. Photography is allowed throughout. You'll taste several flavored varieties: chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and cinnamon are the ones the estate highlights. The factory also produces herbal teas used in Sri Lankan traditional medicine, and you'll learn which ones address specific health concerns.
