What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup from Colombo or Negombo in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided along the way. A private 4x4 safari jeep awaits at Udawalawe National Park with a knowledgeable local driver guiding you through herds of elephants and other wildlife before heading back comfortably in the evening.

I didn’t really expect to see so many elephants at Udawalawe National Park — you hear numbers, but it’s different when you’re actually there. We’d left Colombo before sunrise (I was groggy, not going to lie), and by the time we reached the park, the air had that warm, grassy smell I always associate with Sri Lanka’s countryside. Our driver, Suresh, kept pointing out birds I’d never even heard of. He laughed when I tried to pronounce “peafowl” in Sinhala — apparently I butchered it pretty badly.

The real moment hit when our jeep rolled over a bump and suddenly there they were: a whole herd of Asian elephants, just moving through the grass like nobody was watching. You could hear them tearing at branches — that slow crunching sound — and one baby elephant kept trying to chase off some egrets. It was quieter than I expected. Even the other jeeps seemed to hang back respectfully. Our guide explained how Udawalawe is different because the elephants don’t migrate much here; they’re around all year, which is rare for Sri Lanka.

We saw water buffalo too, and some monkeys making a racket near the edge of the forest. The sun started dipping lower and everything turned gold for a while — I still think about that light sometimes. Suresh handed us cold bottled water (felt like heaven after hours in the jeep) and told us stories about growing up nearby. There wasn’t any rush; we just watched until the elephants wandered off again. On the drive back toward Colombo, my shirt smelled faintly of dust and grass, which weirdly made me happy.
