The experience

You're picked up from your Colombo hotel and driven to Sigiriya in an air-conditioned vehicle with your own driver for the day. The tour starts at the Sigiriya Museum, where an informative video in English, Sinhala or Tamil sets the history. The fortress was nominated as the 8th Wonder of the World and sits on a massive rock column that rises from the central plains. From there you climb to the palace ruins at the top, moving through the site at your own pace. The museum has two levels: the first floor holds six galleries covering prehistoric objects and Buddhist periods. The second recreates the ancient frescoes that once decorated the fortress.

After Sigiriya, you stop at the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, a world heritage site and sacred pilgrimage destination for over 22 centuries. It's the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. A short visit to Oak Ray Woodcarving follows, where you watch artisans carve intricate designs and learn how natural pigments (made from crushed leaves, lime, bee honey and iodine) were used to paint the ancient frescoes that have survived centuries without fading. You'll receive a complimentary king coconut water and a traditional woodcarving piece.

After lunch (on your own), the afternoon shifts to wildlife. You board a 4x4 jeep with an English-speaking tracker and head into Minneriya National Park for a safari. The park holds one of Sri Lanka's most exotic ranges of flora, fauna, birds and animals, and you have a real chance to spot wild Asian elephants and other wildlife across the landscape. The jeep returns you to your Colombo hotel by evening.
