The Experience

Your driver meets you at your hotel lobby—arrive 10 minutes early—and you'll head north toward Dambulla, about 148 kilometres from Colombo. The journey gives you time to settle in. Stop for coffee at a local café before reaching the Dambulla Cave Temple complex, a World Heritage Site carved into a rock face 160 metres above the road. The temple is the largest and best-preserved cave complex in Sri Lanka, with Buddha images created over 2,000 years ago and added to by successive kings. After Dambulla, you drive to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the centrepiece of the day. The black rock rises 600 feet and was built over 1,600 years ago as a palace complex; its sides were once painted with frescoes of semi-naked nymphs, and a lion-shaped gatehouse guarded the entrance to the Sky Palace at the summit. Before climbing, you can visit the Sigiriya Museum, which documents three decades of archaeological research and displays the site's cultural and technological significance.
