The experience

Your driver meets you at your hotel lobby, arrive 10 minutes early, and you'll head north toward Dambulla, about 148 kilometres from Colombo. The journey gives you time to settle in. Stop for coffee at a local café before reaching the Dambulla Cave Temple complex, a World Heritage Site carved into a rock face 160 metres above the road. The temple is the largest and best-preserved cave complex in Sri Lanka, with Buddha images created over 2,000 years ago and added to by successive kings. You'll remove your shoes and hat to enter. Shoulders and knees must be covered. The entrance fee is paid on-site in local rupees or by card (USD cash is not accepted here).

After Dambulla, you drive to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the centrepiece of the day. The black rock rises 600 feet and was built over 1,600 years ago as a palace complex. Its sides were once painted with frescoes of semi-naked nymphs, and a lion-shaped gatehouse guarded the entrance to the Sky Palace at the summit. Before climbing, you can visit the Sigiriya Museum, which documents three decades of archaeological research and displays the site's cultural and technological significance. The climb itself depends on your pace: 30 minutes if you move steadily without stopping, or up to two hours if you pause often for photos and to catch your breath. The entrance fee (around 35 USD) is paid at the gate in local rupees, by card, or in USD cash. Your guide assists throughout and speaks English, French, German, Spanish or Arabic depending on your option.

The day wraps with a stop at a wood carving workshop (a chance to browse traditional masks and elephant ornaments if you want a souvenir) before your driver returns you to your hotel. Bring comfortable walking shoes, cash for entrance fees and any extras you want (coffee, juice and snacks are not included and are paid separately), and plan for a full day of travel and climbing. The tour runs 12 to 14 hours depending on traffic and how long you spend at each site. Bottled water and seasonal fruit are provided. Wifi is available during travel when the network allows.
