The experience

The day starts with pickup from your Colombo hotel (or Mount Lavinia, or in front of the Dutch Hospital) at 6am. After a 3- to 4-hour drive, you reach the base of Sigiriya Rock Fortress and begin the climb. The rock rises 100 meters, and as you ascend the western side you pass through a cavity where 21 colored frescoes of Sigiriya ladies remain painted on the stone: a fragment of fifth-century royal art. King Kashyapa built the palace at the summit in the fifth century, and the design shows the defensive moats and ramparts that once surrounded the fortress. The climb and full sightseeing takes around 2 hours.

After Sigiriya, you're driven to a local restaurant for lunch (your expense). Then the tour moves to Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, also called the Golden Temple and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The temple complex spreads across five caves of different sizes, built by King Walagambahu in the first century BC. Inside you'll see around 50 statues of Lord Buddha and paintings covering the ceiling and walls. Once you finish at Dambulla, your chauffeur guide drives you back to Colombo, dropping you at your hotel or your original pickup point.

The tour includes a liter of bottled water, fuel, and transport in an air-conditioned vehicle with your guide. Your guide speaks English or Japanese. Dress code for both temples requires knees and shoulders fully covered: no shorts or sleeveless tops. The total day is 12 to 15 hours from pickup to drop-off.
