The experience
Sigiriya Rock Fortress rises from jungle in the middle of the island. A massive rock shield that was the capital of ancient Sri Lanka in the mid-300s. What makes it an engineering landmark is the plumbing system built into the rock itself, using channels and reservoirs to carry water to the palace at the summit. You climb past cave villas with frescoed walls and the famous Mirror Wall, a polished surface that once reflected light across the fortress. The site holds some of the few surviving fresco paintings from that era, applied to wet plaster in a technique that has lasted over 1,600 years.
Dambulla Cave Temple sits 350 feet high on a rock outcrop and contains five painted caves that have served as a monastery since the 1st century BC. The largest and best-preserved cave temple in Sri Lanka, it was given refuge to a king fleeing war and later became one of the most important Buddhist sites on the island. A golden Buddha statue represents the ancient Sinhala sculpture tradition, and the painted interiors of all five caves show the artistic significance that led UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage site in 1991. On clear days, the panoramic views from the site take in Sigiriya, Kandalama and Ritigala mountains.
The tour runs 10 to 12 hours from hotel pickup in Colombo or Negombo. You travel in a climate-controlled private vehicle with an English-speaking chauffeur-guide, and lunch is served at a three-star restaurant in historic Dambulla City.
