The experience

The day starts at your hotel, where your driver/guide picks you up in an air-conditioned vehicle. The route takes you to Sigiriya Rock Fortress first, where you'll climb the ancient fortress and see the marvels of its architecture set into the rock face. From there, the tour moves to Dambulla Cave Temple, a complex of cave temples carved into the mountainside and filled with Buddha images and statues. The itinerary also includes Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Necropolis. Your guide speaks English throughout and can answer questions about what you're seeing at each stop.

The full day runs 10 to 12 hours depending on traffic and the time of day. You'll have a lunch break where you can bring your own food and drinks or purchase meals locally. The air-conditioned vehicle means you're not exposed to the heat during the long stretches between sites. At the end of the day, the driver takes you back to your hotel.
