The experience
The tour picks you up from your Colombo hotel or airport and drives you inland to Sigiriya, where a professional guide walks you through the museum first: three levels built around giant trees using traditional Sri Lankan green building methods. The museum holds photograph galleries from excavations that show the cultural layers of the fortress. Then you climb the rock itself, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built on top of an ancient palace surrounded by gardens and water pools, the engineering still unexplained after fifteen centuries.
After Sigiriya, lunch is included at a restaurant near the site, with a choice of western or Sri Lankan traditional dishes. You then visit the Ayurvedic Herbal Spice Garden, where a guide shows you cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and mace growing at their source: the spices that drew European and Asian merchants to Sri Lanka's ports centuries ago. The garden visit gives you the context behind the flavors you'll recognize in the food.
The afternoon takes you to Ibbankatuwa Megalithic Tombs, an ancient burial site from Sri Lanka's prehistoric and protohistoric periods, and then to Dambulla cave temple, also called the Golden Temple of Dambulla. This World Heritage Site holds five sanctuaries carved into rock and has been a pilgrimage destination for 22 centuries. The cave complex contains 157 Buddhist statues and murals of particular historical importance. Your driver and guide handle all logistics (parking, tolls, entry fees), and the air-conditioned vehicle includes bottled water, WiFi and a fresh king coconut during the drive back to Colombo.
