The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Colombo hotel and heads south along the coast. Early stops anchor the route: the Bodhi tree in Kaluthara, believed to be one of 32 saplings from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, and the major Buddhist temple beside it, now an archaeological site. From there the landscape shifts: Bentota Beach opens up as a long sandy resort strip, and the stops that follow are built around what lives and is made along this stretch of coast.
The Madu River boat safari is the centerpiece of the middle hours. A one-and-a-half-hour journey takes you into primitive mangrove marshes where crocodiles, water monitors, tree snakes, cormorants and birds move through the channels. The boat stops at an old Buddhist temple on one of the islands. Between the river and Galle, you pass through Amblangoda, where mask and puppet makers still work in the traditional way, and Meetiyagoda, where moonstones are mined. The finest ones have an almost transparent body with a strong blue shine. A stop at the Community Tsunami Museum preserves the memory and education around the 2004 event. Hikkaduwa, a seaside resort town known for strong surf, sits just before Galle. Its shallow waters shelter a coral sanctuary and marine turtles.
Galle Fort closes the day. Built first by the Portuguese in 1588 and extensively fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onward, it sits in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast and has kept a polished appearance over more than 423 years through ongoing reconstruction work by Sri Lanka's Archaeological Department. The fort is a historical, archaeological and architectural monument, and you walk its ramparts and streets before the drive back to Colombo.
