The Experience
I nearly missed the first turn—our driver just grinned and said, “Everyone does.” That’s how our day trip from Colombo to southern Sri Lanka started, a little lost but mostly excited. The air was thick and warm, even inside the van (thank god for AC), and I kept catching glimpses of the ocean between palm trees. Our guide, Sunil, was already telling us stories about Galle before we’d even left the city limits. He had this way of pointing out things you’d never notice—tiny shrines tucked into roadside corners, old men playing cards under a banyan tree. I liked that.
When we reached Galle Fort, it felt like stepping into a different world—Dutch walls, faded yellow houses, kids chasing each other along the ramparts. The stone was still warm from the sun. Sunil showed us where the lighthouse stands against all that blue—he laughed when I tried to say its name in Sinhala (I definitely butchered it). I could smell baking bread somewhere nearby, mixed with salty air and incense from a tiny temple wedged between shops. We wandered those cobbled streets for what felt like hours but probably wasn’t.
The boat ride on Maadu River was quieter than I expected. Mangroves pressed in close—sometimes so close you could touch them—and birds flashed white over the water. There was this odd moment where tiny fish nibbled at my feet during a “fish massage”—I didn’t last long before pulling them out (it tickles more than you think). Later at Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, we met volunteers gently cradling baby turtles; one let me hold a hatchling for a second. Its shell felt softer than I imagined. There’s something about seeing someone care that much about these creatures—it sticks with you.
Lunch was right on Unawatuna Beach—plastic chairs in the sand, spicy curry that made my nose run (in a good way), waves crashing just meters away. We watched stilt fishermen balancing like tightrope walkers out in the surf; Sunil joked that I’d fall off in two seconds if I tried it myself. Maybe he’s right. On the way back we stopped at the Japanese Peace Pagoda—a little hush after all that color and noise—and just stood there watching evening clouds roll over Galle city. The drive home felt slower somehow.
