The experience
Eight to nine hours in a private air-conditioned car means you move at your own rhythm without a fixed schedule or group. The driver picks you up from your Colombo hotel and handles the 90-minute drive south to the first stop: a wetland estuary spreading across 900 hectares, most of it water, dotted with 64 islands and ringed by one of Sri Lanka's last pristine mangrove forests. A boat ride through the channels lets you see the ecosystem up close. This is a Ramsar-protected site, one of the country's most intact wetland reserves.
The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project comes next. You'll walk through the hatchery to see different species of sea turtles at various stages, and depending on timing and availability, you can release a baby turtle into the sea. After that, the route takes you to Meetiyagoda to tour a moonstone mine and its workshop, then to Hikkaduwa Beach for a break. The final stop is Galle Fort, built first by the Portuguese in 1588 and then heavily fortified by the Dutch from 1649 onward. It's the largest remaining European fortress in Asia and sits on a peninsula jutting into the Bay of Galle. The walls and bastions are open to walk, and the views across the bay are unobstructed.
Your driver speaks English and provides a mineral water bottle when you arrive. Lunch is not included, so you'll choose where and when to eat along the route. Entrance fees at each site are separate. The return journey to Colombo takes the same route and ends at your hotel.
