The experience
You start from your Colombo hotel or the airport and travel south in an air-conditioned vehicle with a driver and guide. The first stop is Madu Ganga River, a 915-hectare coastal wetland where you board a boat to drift through mangrove channels and watch the landscape open toward the Indian Ocean. The river is relatively unspoiled, and the boat trip gives you a close look at how the ecosystem works, and if timing aligns, you'll see the stilt fishermen of Galle at work, a fishing method unique to Sri Lanka that involves standing on wooden poles in shallow water.
Before reaching Galle Fort itself, the tour stops at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, a hatchery where you see how the center protects and raises sea turtles. You also visit an ayurvedic herbal and spice garden where plants are labeled with their uses. A 10-minute ayurvedic head massage is available here. Then you move into Galle town and spend time inside Galle Fort, a UNESCO site founded by the Portuguese in the 16th century and developed by the Dutch in the 18th. The fort is the best-preserved European fortified city in South and Southeast Asia, with over 423 years of history still visible in its walls, gates and streets. Inside you walk past the All Saints Church, the Dutch Reformed Church, the Meeran Jumma Mosque, the National Maritime Archaeology Museum and the Lighthouse.
The guide speaks English, Arabic or Korean depending on your booking. Food and drink are available for purchase along the route. Your pickup and drop-off are included, and the vehicle handles all transport between sites.
