The Experience
I’ll admit it: we nearly missed our pickup in Colombo because I couldn’t find my sunglasses (they were in my bag the whole time). Our driver just grinned and said “No rush, we have all day for Galle!” That set the tone—easygoing but somehow everything ran on time. The van was cool, which I only noticed after stepping out into the sticky morning air at the Turtle Hatchery. The smell there is a mix of saltwater and something sweet—maybe the fruit trees nearby? We watched these tiny turtles flapping around in their tanks; one volunteer handed me a baby that fit in my palm. It squirmed so much I almost dropped it. My partner laughed and said I looked more nervous than the turtle.
We stopped at Bentota Beach for a quick stretch—sand everywhere, even inside my shoes, but it felt good to walk barefoot for a bit. There was this herbal garden next; our guide, Priya, crushed some leaves between her fingers and told us to sniff. Kind of citrusy, kind of earthy. I didn’t expect to care about plants but here we are. Lunch was at some beach place near Galle—spicy curry and rice, nothing fancy but honestly perfect after all that sun. I tried asking for less chili in Sinhala (Li laughed when I tried to say it), but it still burned in a good way.
The Tsunami Photo Museum hit differently—it’s small and packed with photos and drawings from 2004. The woman running it lost family in the disaster; she told us stories that made me quiet for a while after. Onward to see the stilt fishermen at Weligama: they balance on these impossibly thin poles above the waves, barely moving except for their hands flicking lines into the sea. It looks peaceful but also like really hard work—I don’t think I could do it five minutes without falling off.
By late afternoon we reached Galle Fort itself—sunlight bouncing off old coral walls, kids playing cricket in alleys lined with faded Dutch houses. Priya pointed out graffiti from British times and led us through narrow streets where you can still hear church bells if you listen past the tuk-tuks. We ended up at Jungle Beach just before sunset; totally empty except for us and some stray dogs napping under palm trees. Swimming there felt like pressing pause on everything else—I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
