Step-by-step itinerary
Explore heritage and wildlife in Sri Lanka
- Visit Stilt fishermen in Weligama
- Visit Galle Fort
- Lunch in Refresh Restaurant
- Yala National Park Jeep Safari
The experience
The day starts with pickup from your Colombo hotel and a drive south toward the coast. Your first stop is Weligama, where you watch Stilt Fishermen balance on wooden poles in the shallow water: a fishing method unchanged for generations and unique to this stretch of Sri Lanka's southern shore. From there, the route continues to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built into a rocky peninsula with ramparts, colonial-era streets, and views across the Indian Ocean. You walk the fort's perimeter and explore its interior before heading inland toward Yala.
Yala National Park is the reason most travelers book this tour. The reserve holds the world's highest density of leopards, and the open-top jeeps give unobstructed sightlines across scrub jungle, dry grassland, and freshwater lagoons where wildlife congregates. Your guide navigates the park roads, stopping when elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, or bird species appear. The jeep's design (open sides, elevated seating) trades a roof for sight lines and camera angles. The guide handles safety and route choices. Lunch happens at Refresh Restaurant partway through the day, though the meal itself is included only in the all-inclusive option. If you choose transportation only, you arrange and pay for food separately.
The full loop takes twelve to fifteen hours from hotel to hotel. Pickup and drop-off are included, as are the park entrance fees and jeep charges in the all-inclusive package. A private vehicle means no other tourists share your jeep, your guide, or your timing. You move at your own pace and stop as long as wildlife holds your attention. The return to Colombo happens in daylight, arriving by evening.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (6 to 11 years); Infant (under 6): free.
What's the difference between the two options for this tour?
The all-inclusive option covers park entry, jeep charges, lunch, and your guide. Transportation only includes the vehicle, driver and pickup but not the park fees or meals. Choose all-inclusive if you want everything arranged, or transportation only if you're handling park entry and food yourself.
How likely am I to see leopards in Yala?
Yala has the world's highest leopard density, so sightings are far more common here than in other reserves. Your guide knows where they're most active and navigates accordingly, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The animals move freely and may not appear on any given day.
What does the Stilt Fishermen stop involve?
At Weligama you watch fishermen standing on wooden poles anchored in shallow water, using hand-held rods to fish. It's a traditional method practiced only in this region. You observe from the shore or a short distance away and can photograph the scene.
How much time do we spend at Galle Fort?
Galle Fort is a scheduled stop on the route where you walk the ramparts and explore the streets inside the UNESCO site. The exact duration depends on your group's pace and interests, but it's built into the day's itinerary before the drive to Yala.
Is the jeep open-air, and what's the weather like?
Yes, the jeeps are open-top, which gives excellent visibility and photography access but no protection from sun or rain. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and a light rain jacket. The park sits in Sri Lanka's dry zone, so rain is less common than in other regions, but afternoon showers can occur.
Can I bring my own food or drinks into Yala?
You can bring water and snacks. Lunch is provided at Refresh Restaurant if you booked the all-inclusive option. Alcoholic drinks are available to purchase during the day but are not included in any package.
