The experience

The day starts before sunrise with pickup from your Colombo hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle. The drive itself is part of the experience: you'll pass neighborhood stores, paddy fields, tall trees and locals going about their daily business on the way to Wilpattu's entrance. If you need to rest or stretch, the driver will stop without detour. Along the route you can try seasonal fruits and a king coconut to stay cool.

Once at the park, you switch to a 4x4 jeep for the safari across rugged terrain. Wilpattu (which means "natural lakes" in Sinhala) is home to several lakes and holds the largest concentration of leopards in Sri Lanka, alongside elephants, sloth bears, foxes, mongooses, deer, crocodiles, reptiles and a wide variety of native birds. The park is one of the top wildlife photography destinations in the country, and the jeep gives you access to terrain a regular vehicle cannot reach. Your guide speaks English or Tamil and knows where to look for the animals that move through the reserve.

After the safari, you'll stop at a local restaurant for Sri Lankan food before the drive back to your accommodation. The full outing runs 12 to 14 hours depending on traffic and the time of day, and it is subject to favorable weather. If poor conditions force a cancellation, you can reschedule for another date.
