The experience
The day starts with a 3-hour drive north from Colombo in an air-conditioned vehicle. Your private guide meets you at your hotel and handles all the driving, leaving you free to watch the landscape shift from coastal plains toward the dry zone where these ancient cities stand. The first stop is Aukana, where a 40-foot Buddha statue rises from a granite rock face, carved during the 5th century with the robe and hand gesture (Abhaya mudra) still sharp enough to read the stone's grain from below.
Anuradhapura itself holds eight major sites within walking and short-drive distance of each other. The Ruwanweli Maha Seya is the centerpiece: a towering stupa built by King Dutugemunu in 140 BC that holds the largest collection of Buddha's relics and stands as the spiritual heart of the ancient city. Nearby, the Sri Maha Bodhiya is a living tree grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha reached enlightenment. It was planted here in 288 BC and remains a pilgrimage destination. The Jethawanaramaya stupa once rose over 120 meters high as one of the tallest brick structures of the ancient world. You'll also see the Thuparamaya, the first stupa ever built in Sri Lanka after Buddhism arrived, and the Mirisawetiya Stupa, built as an act of penance by a king who forgot to feed the monks. The Kuttam Pokuna, Twin Ponds, show the hydraulic engineering that served the monasteries, and the Moonstone at temple entrances displays the intricate symbolic carving that defined Sinhalese artistry.
Bottled water and WiFi on board keep you connected between sites. The tour runs 8 to 10 hours total, which accounts for the drive, time at each monument, and the distances within Anuradhapura's spread-out archaeological zone. Your guide speaks English throughout and can answer questions about the history and religious significance of what you're seeing, though entrance tickets to Aukana and Anuradhapura are separate purchases at the gate.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 9 years); Infant (under 4): free.
How far is the drive from Colombo to Aukana, and what's the road like?
The drive takes roughly 3 hours each way on the main highway heading north toward the dry zone. The route is paved and well-traveled, and your air-conditioned vehicle handles the distance, so you arrive rested enough to walk the sites without fatigue.
What exactly is the Aukana Buddha statue, and why is it so famous?
The Aukana statue is a 40-foot standing Buddha carved directly out of a granite rock face during the 5th century. It depicts a specific hand gesture called the Abhaya mudra, and the robe is carved with such detail that you can see the folds and fabric texture from the ground below. It's one of the finest examples of ancient Buddhist sculpture in Sri Lanka.
Is the Sri Maha Bodhiya tree really the oldest tree in the world?
The Sri Maha Bodhiya is the oldest historically documented tree still living in one location. It was grown from a sapling of the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment and was planted in Anuradhapura in 288 BC, making it over 2,300 years old. It remains a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists.
How many stupas and temples will I actually visit in Anuradhapura?
Your guide takes you to at least five major stupas (the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Jethawanaramaya, Thuparamaya, and Mirisawetiya) plus the Sri Maha Bodhiya tree, the Kuttam Pokuna Twin Ponds, and the carved Moonstone at temple entrances. The sites are spread across the archaeological zone, so you move between them by vehicle and on foot.
Do I need to buy entrance tickets separately, or are they included?
Entrance tickets to Aukana and Anuradhapura are not included in the tour price and must be purchased at each site. Your guide will direct you to the ticket booths, and the cost is modest, but budget time for the purchase at each location.
