Walk the vineyards, taste the wines, eat what grows there
This is a lunch and vineyard walk at Quinta dos Novais, a small family-run organic estate in the Douro Valley near Peso da Régua. You'll tour the vineyards with the people who tend them, learn how they make wine without chemicals, then eat a four-course traditional Portuguese meal at their table, each course paired with one of their own wines: three dry Douro wines and one Port. Dietary needs are accommodated with advance notice.
The Experience
The experience opens with a guided walk through the estate vineyards, either before or after lunch: your hosts decide based on the day. You'll move through the rows with the people who farm them, learning how organic viticulture works in practice: no chemical herbicides or pesticides, low-intervention winemaking, and how the Douro's terroir shapes what ends up in the bottle. They'll show you the different wine styles the quinta produces, from fresh dry wines to Port, and explain the grape varieties and aging methods that make each one distinct.
Lunch is served in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere around a shared table. The meal unfolds in four food moments, each paired with an estate wine. You'll start with local artisan bread and the quinta's own olives, then move through traditional dishes: alheira sausage, chickpeas salad, grilled Portuguese chouriço, and a main of either Massa à Lavrador, roasted chicken or roasted pork depending on the day. Dessert is either leite creme, a traditional Portuguese custard with a caramelized sugar crust, or Romeu e Julieta, quince marmalade served with local cheese. Three dry Douro wines accompany the starters and main. One Port pairs with dessert. Nearly all ingredients are seasonal and sourced from the estate itself.
The whole experience runs about two hours. Vegetarian, vegan and other dietary requirements are fully accommodated if you mention them when you book. The quinta is wheelchair accessible, and infants can come in a pram or stroller. Specialized infant seats are available. You'll need your own transport to reach the vineyard.
