The experience

The tour departs Muscat at 8:30 AM on day one and heads to Bimmah Sink Hole, a meteor crater near the sea, then Fins Beach with its white pebble shore. The main event is Wadi Shab: a 35-minute hike through a palm-lined canyon leads to crystal-clear pools where you swim from pool to pool, eventually reaching a cave with a small waterfall and an opening in the rocks that lets sunlight turn the water turquoise. The day ends at Ras al Hadd, where the beaches are a breeding ground for green sea turtles, with an overnight stay at Turtle Beach Resort.

Day two begins at Sur, where you see the city's old fortresses and the Arabian Dhow Factory where traditional wooden boats are still built by hand. The route continues to an Omani farm, then Wadi Bani Khalid, one of Oman's largest wadis, where you can swim, sunbathe and picnic in the canyon. Late afternoon brings a 4×4 drive across Wahiba Sands desert dunes, a sunset watch from the high sand, dinner at the camp, and a night under the stars with a campfire. You'll wake early to watch the sunrise from the dunes before breakfast.

Day three drives to Nizwa, Oman's former capital, to tour Nizwa Fort (now a museum with views over the ancient town and surrounding mountains), and browse the souk for Omani silver and handmade crafts. The route then climbs toward Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain), passing through Birkat Al Mouz, a village built into a mountainside, and the UNESCO-listed Al Kattmyn irrigation system. Jebel Akhdar rises to 2,980 meters with the Saiq Plateau at 2,000 meters, and you stay at Sama Hotel on the mountain. On day four, you visit Al Hamra's old village to see how locals lived in earlier times, then Misfah Al Abryeen, home to some of Oman's oldest preserved houses. The final stop is Jebel Shams, the Grand Canyon of Oman at 3,009 meters, before the drive back to Muscat.
