The experience
The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque opens the tour: its single handmade Iranian carpet weighs 21 tons and can hold 20,000 worshippers. From there you move through Muscat's landmarks: the Royal Opera House, Qurum Beach for photos, Muttrah Souq (one of Oman's oldest markets) and the harbor corniche, then Al Alam Palace and the twin Al Jalali and Mirani Forts overlooking the city. The half-day city loop runs about four hours starting at 8:30 AM.
Day two departs at 8:30 AM toward the coast. Bimmah Sinkhole (a meteor crater with a lake at its base near the sea) comes first, then Fins Beach with its white pebbles and turquoise water. Wadi Shab is the centerpiece: a canyon lined with palms where a 35-minute hike leads through crystal-clear pools you can swim through, ending at a cave with a small waterfall where sunlight turns the water turquoise. After Wadi Tiwi photo stop, you reach Turtle Beach Resort in Ras Al Hadd.
Day three starts in Sur, where you see the Arabian Dhow Factory and traditional wooden boats being built by hand. The route continues to an Omani Ghazal Farm, then Wadi Bani Khalid: one of Oman's largest wadis, where you can swim and picnic in the canyon. Late afternoon brings the Wahiba Sands desert camp, where you can take a 4x4 drive across the dunes and watch sunset from the sand before dinner and campfire at the camp.
Day four begins with sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast and photo stops in the sand, you climb to Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain), which rises to 2,980 meters and holds the Saiq Plateau at 2,000 meters. Birkat al Mouz (a village built into a mountain face), and the Kattmyn irrigation system (a UNESCO World Heritage Site added in 2006) follow. The final stop is Jebel Shams, Oman's Grand Canyon at 3,009 meters, before the drive back to Muscat.
