The experience
How do you see the real Oman without spending six days planning separate bookings and navigating on your own? A private guide and a single vehicle for all six days means you move through the country on one itinerary, with someone who knows the wadis, the mountain roads, and the families who still live in the old villages. The guide is licensed, speaks English, and tailors the route to what you actually want to see: history, nature, culture, or all three. You travel in an air-conditioned 4x4 that handles the steep mountain terrain and the desert tracks where regular cars stop.
Day one stays in Muscat: the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque with its Swarovski chandelier and hand-woven Persian carpet, the Royal Opera House, Al Alam Palace framed by the Portuguese forts Jalali and Mirani, Muttrah Souq where frankincense and silver fill the stalls, and Bait Al Zubair Museum. Day two heads east to Wadi Shab, where you hike through a canyon lined with palms and swim through turquoise pools to a hidden cave and waterfall, then visit the Bimmah Sinkhole and Sur's dhow shipyard to watch traditional wooden boats being built by hand. Day three takes you to Wadi Bani Khalid, one of Oman's deepest oases, for swimming, then into Wahiba Sands for dune bashing in a 4x4, a sunset climb, and a night in a Bedouin-style desert camp with Omani food and stargazing.
Days four and five move into the mountains and heritage sites. Jabal Akhdar, the "Green Mountain", sits at altitude with terraced fruit and rose gardens, Diana's Point for canyon views, and mountain lunch with a view of the Hajar range. Nizwa Fort and its souq anchor the heritage trail, where you'll see pottery, silver, and spices in the old market. Bahla Fort (UNESCO World Heritage) and Jabreen Castle, a 17th-century structure with decorated ceilings and hidden staircases, come next. Misfat Al Abriyeen is a preserved mountain village where narrow stone alleys and falaj irrigation channels still work as they have for centuries. Day six climbs Jabal Shams, Oman's highest peak, for the Wadi Nakhar viewpoint, the "Grand Canyon of Arabia", and the Balcony Walk trail along the canyon edge, ending in Al Hamra, one of Oman's oldest villages. The guide handles all driving, route decisions, and cultural context. You bring interest and a willingness to swim, hike, and sit under stars.

Top questions
What's the difference between Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid on this tour?
Wadi Shab on day two is a hike through a dramatic canyon where you swim through pools to reach a hidden cave and waterfall. Wadi Bani Khalid on day three is a deeper oasis known for its largest turquoise pools, surrounded by cliffs and palms, where swimming is the main activity without the cave hike.
Do I need to book accommodations separately, or does the tour include where I sleep?
Accommodations are not included in the tour price. You arrange your own hotels in Muscat and other towns. The one exception is night three in Wahiba Sands, where you stay in a traditional Bedouin-style desert camp as part of the tour experience.
Are entrance fees to the forts and museums included?
No. Admission to Nizwa Fort, Bahla Fort, Jabreen Castle, Bait Al Zubair Museum, and other attractions is not included. You pay these separately at each site. The tour covers the guide, vehicle, and transportation between locations.
What happens on the Jabal Shams hike on day six? How difficult is it?
Day six includes a drive to Jabal Shams (Oman's highest peak at 3,009 meters) and the Balcony Walk trail along the canyon edge, which offers sweeping views and passes through the abandoned village of As Sab. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Your guide adjusts the pace and distance based on your comfort.
Can I customize which sites we visit, or is the itinerary fixed?
The tour is customizable. Your guide tailors the route based on your interests: history, nature, culture, or a mix of all three. The six-day structure and main sites stay the same, but the guide works with you on pacing, which stops matter most, and how much time you spend at each location.
What's included in the tour price besides the guide and vehicle?
The private 4x4 vehicle, licensed Omani guide speaking English, bottled water, and light snacks throughout the six days are included. Meals, accommodations (except the desert camp night), entrance fees, and any activities beyond the itinerary are separate.
