The experience
The route builds around water and geology. Day one is a half-day loop through Muscat itself: the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque with its 21-ton Iranian carpet, the Royal Opera House, Muttrah Souk dating back two centuries, and Al Alam Palace in Old Muscat. Day two heads east to Wadi Shab, where a 35-minute hike through a palm-lined canyon leads to crystal-clear pools. Swimmers move from pool to pool and finish inside a crevice cave with a small waterfall and turquoise water lit by daylight from above. The route also passes Wadi Tiwi and Fins Beach before the night stop at Turtle Beach Resort.
Day three swings inland to Sur's dhow shipyards, then Wadi Bani Khalid (one of Oman's largest wadis with emerald pools and canyon walls) before reaching the Wahiba Sands desert camp at sunset. Day four rises early to watch sunrise from the dunes, then climbs Jebel Akhdar (the Green Mountain), which rises to 2,980 meters and holds the Saiq Plateau at 2,000 meters. The day includes Birkat Al Mouz village, nestled into a mountainside and surrounded by banana plantations. Day five visits Nizwa Fort, a 17th-century castle and one of Oman's most visited monuments, and the Nizwa Souk for Omani silver and handmade goods, then passes through Al Hamra's 400-year-old town and the mountain village of Misfat Al Abriyeen before finishing at Jebel Shams, Oman's highest peak, and driving back to Muscat.
The tour runs as a shared group with an English-speaking Omani guide. A 4WD vehicle carries the group across terrain that ranges from city streets to desert sand and mountain roads. Four nights of accommodation are included. The fifth night (Day 5 return to Muscat) is not, so you'll need to arrange your own hotel or book an onward flight. Bottled water travels with the group, and dietary needs like vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free can be noted at booking.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Arabic.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 72 h before the start.
What is Wadi Shab like when you get there?
Wadi Shab is a canyon gorge lined with palm trees that narrows as you hike upstream. The 35-minute walk leads to a series of crystal-clear pools where you can swim from one to the next, eventually reaching a crevice cave with a small waterfall inside. Sunlight filters through the rocks and turns the water turquoise.
Can you swim in the wadis on this tour?
Yes. Wadi Shab has multiple pools built for swimming, and Wadi Bani Khalid has emerald pools where you can swim and sunbathe. Both are included stops where you have time in the water.
What happens at the Wahiba Sands desert camp?
You arrive in late afternoon, relax at the camp, and watch sunset from one of the large sand dunes. Dinner is served at the camp. The next morning you wake early to watch sunrise from the dunes before breakfast and the drive onward.
Does the tour visit Nizwa Fort and the souq?
Yes, both are on Day 5. Nizwa Fort is a 17th-century castle that shows traditional Omani architecture and how people lived in ancient times. The Nizwa Souk is one of Oman's oldest marketplaces, dedicated to fruit, vegetables, meat and fish, with a separate section for Omani silver and handmade crafts.
What is Jebel Shams and why is it on the itinerary?
Jebel Shams is Oman's highest mountain in the Hajar range, known as the "Mountain of the Sun" because it receives sunrise before anywhere else in the country due to its peak height. It's the final major stop on Day 5 before the return drive to Muscat.
Is camel riding included?
No. Camel rides in the Wahiba Sands desert are optional and cost 3 OMR per person, paid directly to the camp. Turtle watching in the evening on Day 2 is also optional at 12 OMR per person.
