4h 30m

Step-by-step itinerary

Snorkeling at Daymaniat Islands

  • Take 25-minute boat trip
  • Explore coral reefs and islets
  • Observe turtles nesting eggs
  • Spot honeycomb Murray Eel and sting rays
  • See schools of fish and black tip sharks
  • Look for whale sharks in summer

The Experience

Someone’s handing me a mask and snorkel before I’ve even fully woken up — I’m still squinting at the sunlight bouncing off the water in Muscat’s harbor. The boat ride out to the Daymaniyat Islands only takes about 25 minutes, but it’s long enough for the sea air to wake you up properly. Our guide, Khalid, is already pointing out the low rocky islets ahead, telling us how these nine islands have been a nature reserve since the ‘90s. He says turtles have been nesting here for centuries — he makes this little circle gesture with his hands when he talks about their eggs. I like that detail for some reason.

I didn’t expect the water to be so clear or the corals to look almost soft under your fingers (don’t touch them though — Khalid gives you a look if you try). Floating there, schools of fish flickering past my legs, I actually spotted a honeycomb moray eel peeking out from a rock. Someone else saw a sting ray glide by. And then there was this moment where everything went quiet except for my own breath through the snorkel. It’s weirdly peaceful down there. In summer, they say whale sharks sometimes show up — we didn’t see one this time, but honestly just knowing it could happen made me keep looking over my shoulder.

Back on the boat, everyone was comparing what they’d seen — three different species of turtles are supposed to be around all year. One guy swore he saw a black tip shark (I missed it). There were snacks and cold drinks waiting; someone passed around dates and I got sticky fingers right away. The sun felt good after being in the water. There’s even a restroom on board which sounds boring but trust me, you’ll care after two hours swimming.

I still think about that view as we left: those rocky little islands lined up against the horizon, birds circling overhead. It’s not fancy or dramatic — just real and kind of timeless. If you’re coming from Muscat and want something that feels alive and local (and includes permits plus all your snorkeling gear), this Daymaniyat Islands snorkeling trip is worth it.
