The experience
You leave Muscat on a boat ride across the Arabian Sea, watching the city's rocky shore recede as the water shifts from blue to turquoise. Forty-five minutes later, the captain anchors at the first snorkel site and briefs the group on safety, what lives on the reef, and how the reserve protects the islands. The Daymaniyat Islands sit in water 20–25 meters deep with visibility that lets you see the coral gardens clearly. You'll find colorful tropical fish, graceful sea turtles, moray eels, reef sharks, and the occasional manta ray or whale shark cruising the reefs.
Between snorkel sessions, you rest on board with sandwiches, fresh fruit, and cold drinks. When island access is open from November through April, you can walk the white sand beaches and rocky formations. Outside those months, the islands stay closed to protect nesting turtles, but the water stays open for snorkeling and kayaking. You'll paddle transparent kayaks where the hull lets you watch marine life moving beneath you. The crew photographs and films the day on GoPro, capturing moments you can take home. On the return to Muscat, dolphins often race alongside the boat.
The whole outing runs about five hours. Snorkeling gear, fins, and a lifejacket are included. You bring your own swimsuit and towel. Bottled water is provided, and the Ministry Permit to enter the reserve area is handled as part of the booking.
