The Experience

The morning didn’t exactly start smooth — I’d forgotten my hat (classic), and the sun was already sharp when we met our captain at Cirkewwa port. He grinned, handed me a spare, and just like that, we were off. The engine hummed under us as Malta’s coast slid away, the air smelling faintly salty with something almost herbal on the breeze. Our guide — Mark, born on Gozo — steered us straight past the crowds at the Blue Lagoon. “We’ll come back when it’s quieter,” he promised, and took us instead to Crystal Lagoon where the water felt cold and soft at once. I tried snorkeling but mostly floated around staring up at limestone cliffs while someone else braved a cliff jump (not me). There was this odd silence out there except for distant laughter echoing off rocks. At one point Mark pointed out Cominotto reef; I still can’t pronounce it right, but he didn’t seem to mind.

Lunch wasn’t fancy — just sandwiches we’d brought along — but eating them with wet hands and sea spray in my hair made them taste better than any café lunch. We drifted into little bays like Santa Marija and Hondoq, where the only sounds were gentle waves and someone from another boat singing in Maltese (I wish I knew what about). On Gozo, Mark told us stories about Halfa Rock that made me want to stay longer. The sun got lower, turning everything gold and sleepy. I didn’t expect to feel so relaxed — or maybe just grateful for not being part of the big tour groups we saw from a distance.
