The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the slap of salt air — not gentle, but sharp enough to wake you up. We’d barely left Mgarr Harbour in Gozo when our skipper, Mark (he grew up here), pointed out a limestone arch shaped like an elephant’s head. I tried to touch it and it felt colder than I expected for June.

We drifted into the Blue Lagoon before most of the crowds showed up. Mark handed us snorkels and told us where to spot parrotfish near Santa Marija Bay — he said they nibble your toes if you stand still long enough (I didn’t test that). There was this moment where everything went quiet except for someone laughing on another boat and the slap-slap of water against rock. The sun was already high but there were still patches of cool shade under the cliffs. You could smell sunscreen and seaweed mixed together — not unpleasant, just real.

I liked how we didn’t rush. We poked around little coves, found a sandy patch at San Niklaw Bay where some local kids were skipping stones (one waved at us). Mark let us try paddle boarding near the caves — I fell off twice and he laughed but helped me back up. The caves themselves are weirdly silent inside, except for drips echoing around you.
