The experience

You board a Jeep at Mġarr Harbour after hotel pickup between 8 and 9:15 a.m., and an experienced driver takes the wheel for the next seven to eight hours. The driver provides commentary at each stop in your chosen language (English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Dutch, French or Polish), so you can ask questions without shouting over the engine. A maximum of five passengers per Jeep means the vehicle stays nimble on Gozo's narrow roads and tight coastal turns.

The route threads through the island's north and west: Ramla Bay with its distinctive red sand; Calypso's Cave overlooking the beach where Homer's Odyssey is said to have been set; the 200-year-old Ta' Kola Windmill, a relic of the Knights' period; Ġgantija Temples, UNESCO-listed megalithic structures built around 3600–2500 BC and older than Stonehenge; the Rotunda of Xewkija with its third-highest unsupported dome in the world; the fortified Citadel at Victoria; and the Xwejni Salt Pans, where salt farmers still harvest by hand across a chequerboard of mirrored pools. You stop at Xlendi, a coastal town ringed by cliffs, and at Dwejra Bay on the western shore: a geological haven where an optional boat trip (paid on location, around €6 per person, weather permitting) threads through a 65-meter natural tunnel into the Inland Sea.

Lunch is included at a local restaurant with wine and mineral water. In summer and if conditions allow, the tour includes a swim stop at Comino Island. The return to Malta happens by boat, passing Comino's Blue Lagoon and Sea Caves if weather cooperates. Otherwise you take the communal Gozo Channel ferry. Ġgantija temple entry (around €10 per person) is optional and paid on site if you choose to visit during the free time allocated.

What is Ġgantija and why is it on this tour?

Ġgantija Temples are megalithic structures dating to around 3600–2500 BC, making them the second oldest free-standing buildings in the world after Göbekli Tepe in Turkey: older than Stonehenge and the Pyramids. Built from limestone blocks weighing over 50 tonnes, they've been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. The tour passes the site and gives you free time to enter if you pay the admission fee on location.

Does the tour include a swim, and when can I take one?

A seasonal swim stop at Comino Island is included in summer months, weather and sea conditions permitting. If conditions don't allow it, the swim is skipped that day. The return journey to Malta includes a boat ride past Comino's Blue Lagoon and Sea Caves, also subject to weather.

Is the boat trip through Dwejra's Inland Sea included?

No, the boat trip through the 65-meter natural tunnel at Dwejra Bay is optional and costs around €6 per person, paid on location. It's only available if weather and sea conditions are favourable. The tour stops at Dwejra Bay regardless, so you see the geological site and can decide on the boat trip when you arrive.

What time does pickup happen, and where?

Can I visit Xlendi and the salt pans, or are those just drive-bys?
