The Experience

The tour starts with the Bethlehem f'Għajnsielem village, a 20,000-square-metre open-air nativity set up on fields near Għajnsielem on Gozo's main island. About 150 actors in period costume bring the scene to life—horses turn mills, shepherds inhabit caves, animals roam in enclosed spaces, and a couple tends a newborn in a grotto. It is the tenth edition of this event, and it runs through December. From there, you move to the Christmas market at Villa Rundle Gardens, where local voluntary organisations staff stalls selling food, drinks, sweets, decorations and traditional pasturi, with Father Christmas and storytelling sessions throughout the day.

As evening falls, the tour takes you to the Gozo Cittadella, the ancient fortified city that sits at the island's heart. At night, the stone walls are lit up, and the site is barely visited—you get the quiet and the photo opportunities without the daytime crowds. The church bells and the rustling wind are the only sounds. After the Cittadella, you return to Villa Rundle Gardens to see the illuminations inside the gardens themselves, where the seasonal sparkle is at its brightest.

Dinner is a three-course meal: a Maltese platter to start, then a choice of local baked pasta or salad, finished with traditional Christmas pudding and a glass of mulled wine or wine and water. Your driver is knowledgeable and friendly, and you'll get a gift from Santa at the end of the day. The tour runs for 6 hours total. Hotel pickup is included, as are the boat transfers to and from Gozo (weather permitting; if weather prevents the boat, a communal ferry and ferry tickets are provided instead).
