The Experience
We slid out of Ċirkewwa just before lunch, sun already high but not too fierce. The boat was bigger than I expected—roomy enough that nobody elbowed for space, and there were these padded spots where you could just flop down. Our skipper, Mario, waved us up top if we wanted more sun (I lasted maybe ten minutes). There was this salty tang in the air mixed with something sweet from the bar—someone ordered a cocktail at 11am and honestly? Good for them.
The first real stop was the Blue Lagoon. I’d seen photos everywhere but being there is… well, it’s louder than you think. Kids squealing as they hit the water, people gasping when they first jump in because it’s colder than it looks. I tried snorkeling—mask was five euros to rent—and saw these tiny silver fish darting around my toes. Some folks wandered off for a walk along the rocks; I mostly floated and let my brain go quiet. Our guide pointed out Elephant Rock as we cruised past—it really does look like an elephant if you squint right. Li laughed when I tried to say its Maltese name (I butchered it).
Later we stopped at Crystal Lagoon—less crowded, almost glassy. The cliffs made everything echo: voices bouncing off stone, gulls screeching overhead. There’s this moment when you climb back on board after swimming and your skin feels tight from salt and sun—you know that feeling? We swung by Mġarr Harbour in Gozo for quick photos; locals waved from tiny boats loaded with crates of lemons or something yellow anyway.
I didn’t expect to care about sea caves but when we drifted close, the water turned this deep blue-green that looked fake until you dipped your hand in. Someone snapped a photo of me grinning like an idiot—probably one for the fridge back home. By the time we headed back toward Malta, everyone had that slow-lazy look you get after swimming all afternoon. Still think about that light on the cliffs sometimes.
What’s included
