The Experience
I didn’t expect the ferry from Bugibba to smell so much like sunscreen and coffee — but there we were, crammed in with families and couples, everyone already sticky with anticipation. The sea was that kind of blue you only see on postcards (or maybe Instagram), and I caught myself grinning for no reason as we pulled away from Malta. There’s no guide on this Gozo & Comino day trip, so you sort of drift into your own little adventure. I liked that — nobody herding us around, just a rough plan and the freedom to wander.
The Cittadella in Victoria rises up out of nowhere, all honey-colored stone and sunlight bouncing off the old walls. I tried to imagine what it must’ve felt like centuries ago when this place was an acropolis — but honestly, mostly I remember the sound of my shoes echoing on those worn steps and a kid giggling as he chased pigeons across the square. It’s quieter than I thought it’d be. We found a tiny café nearby where an old man poured us cold Kinnie (that weirdly herbal Maltese soda) without saying much, just a nod. Sometimes that’s enough.
Comino is another mood entirely. Santa Marija Tower looks almost too dramatic perched above the cliffs — I mean, it’s straight out of some pirate movie. The wind up there is wild; my hair was everywhere and someone’s hat actually flew off (they got it back after some very ungraceful scrambling). The real showstopper is the Blue Lagoon though. That water doesn’t look real until you’re actually swimming in it — cool against sunburned skin, salt on your lips, laughter echoing over the rocks. I still think about floating there with nothing but sky overhead.
