The experience

I didn’t expect the ferry from Bugibba to smell so much like sunscreen and coffee, but there we were, crammed in with families and couples, everyone already sticky with anticipation. The sea was that kind of blue you only see on postcards (or maybe Instagram), and I caught myself grinning for no reason as we pulled away from Malta. The Cittadella in Victoria rises up out of nowhere, all honey-colored stone and sunlight bouncing off the old walls. My hair was everywhere and someone’s hat actually flew off (they got it back after some very ungraceful scrambling). The real showstopper is the Blue Lagoon though. That water doesn’t look real until you’re actually swimming in it: cool against sunburned skin, salt on your lips, laughter echoing over the rocks. I still think about floating there with nothing but sky overhead.
