The experience
You start at your hotel lobby at 6am, when the park's wildlife is most active. The drive to Lake Nakuru takes three hours and includes a stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint, where the escarpment views frame the landscape you're heading into. You arrive at the park by 9am and move straight into a three-hour game drive with your guide in a safari van with a pop-up roof. The opening gives you sightlines most vehicles can't match. The park is known for one of Africa's largest wild bird populations, with flamingos the signature draw, but the real prize for many visitors is spotting the black rhino and southern white rhino, both rare across the continent.
Midway through the game drive you break for lunch at Lake Nakuru Lodge, a restaurant inside the park, or you can arrange a picnic lunch in advance and eat in the park itself. After lunch, you continue game viewing on the route back out. The whole day (from pickup to drop-off at your hotel) runs 11 to 12 hours, so you're committed to the full arc. There's no half-day option here. Your guide handles the route and the spotting. You watch, photograph and ask questions. Transport, entrance fees and the guide are all included. Food and drinks beyond lunch are on you, and tips for the guide are optional.

Is this one for you?The full day (11 to 12 hours from pickup to drop-off) means you're committed to the park and little else that day, so book this when you have a free morning and afternoon. If you need a shorter outing or want to combine the park with other stops in the region, a half-day tour would suit you better.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 9 years). Under 3: they can't be included in the booking.
What wildlife will I actually see at Lake Nakuru?
Lake Nakuru is famous for its flamingo populations, which can number in the thousands depending on the season, and for black rhinos and southern white rhinos, both of which are rare to encounter elsewhere in Africa. The park also holds other wildlife (antelope, buffalo, leopards and a wide range of birds), so sightings vary by the day and the time of year.
How much driving is there before the game drive starts?
The drive from your hotel to Lake Nakuru takes three hours, with one stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. You arrive at the park by 9am and then begin the three-hour game drive, so you're in the vehicle for most of the day, though the pop-up roof van lets you stand and move while viewing.
Can I bring my own food, or is lunch provided?
Lunch is included and happens at Lake Nakuru Lodge, a restaurant in the park, or you can arrange a picnic lunch in advance to eat in the park itself. Other food and drinks are not included, so bring water and snacks if you want them during the game drive.
