experience

What’s the experience like?

The city was just waking up when our guide, Peter, pulled up outside my hotel at 6am sharp. The air still felt cool—almost crisp, with that faint scent of dew and red dust you only get at dawn in Nairobi. We drove through quiet streets, passing a few boda bodas and sleepy shopkeepers setting up for the day. It’s wild how quickly the city fades behind you; within fifteen minutes, we were rolling up to the main gate of Nairobi National Park.

Peter knew every shortcut and seemed to have a sixth sense for where the animals might be hiding. The pop-up roof on our safari van made it easy to stand up and scan the plains. Right away, we spotted a herd of zebras grazing near the road—so close I could hear them snorting softly. Giraffes moved in slow motion against the skyline, with Nairobi’s towers peeking out behind them. It’s surreal seeing skyscrapers and wild animals in one frame.

We spent hours weaving along dusty tracks, stopping whenever Peter pointed out something interesting—a pair of white rhinos munching quietly, a secretary bird strutting through the grass, even a lioness lounging under an acacia tree. He explained how the park was Kenya’s first national park, set up back in 1945, and shared little stories about animal behavior that made everything feel personal. By 10am, the sun was already warming things up and the animals started moving into the shade. We headed back toward town, windows open, feeling like we’d been a world away even though we never left Nairobi.
