The Experience

I didn’t expect to see giraffes wandering with skyscrapers in the background — it’s kind of surreal. Our guide, Peter, picked us up right from our hotel (he was early, which I appreciated since I’m always paranoid about timing). Driving through Nairobi’s busy streets at sunrise felt like any other city commute until suddenly we were at the East gate and the noise faded. The air changed — that dry, grassy smell you get only in Africa — and then we were rolling over bumpy tracks into the park. I kept looking back at the skyline just to check if it was really there.

Peter knew every shortcut and seemed to have this sixth sense for where the animals might be hiding. We stopped by the Ivory Burning Site first — he explained how presidents had burned piles of tusks here to make a point about poaching. It hit me harder than I thought, standing there with the morning stillness around us. Then we set off again, windows open, scanning for movement. There were buffaloes clustered under acacias and a couple of sleepy-looking lions sprawled out not far from the road. He pointed out a black rhino grazing alone; apparently they're rare now. My camera skills are questionable but honestly, some moments you just want to watch.

We took a break at one of those picnic spots overlooking the plains — there was coffee (instant but somehow perfect), birds everywhere making this constant chattering sound, and even though it was warm, there was a breeze that made me want to stay longer. Peter told us how sometimes cheetahs come right up near here when it’s quiet. Afterward we drove past more giraffes (they move so strangely elegant) before stopping at a little coffee shop outside the park gate for a quick rest. I still think about that view: wild animals on one side, Nairobi’s city towers on the other. Kind of makes you wonder about what “wild” really means.
