The experience
Seeing giraffes wander with skyscrapers in the background is part of what makes this park feel surreal. Your guide picks you up from your hotel or the airport and drives you through Nairobi to the park's East gate. Once inside, the city gives way to wide grasslands dotted with acacia.
The tour can start at the Ivory Burning Site, where Kenyan presidents have set fire to elephant tusks and rhino horns to show the country's stand against poaching. Then the game drive begins, and the van's open roof gives you a clear view as you scan for movement. The park is home to lions, buffaloes, giraffes, leopards, cheetahs and hyenas, plus more than 400 recorded bird species. It's also a place to look for the endangered black rhino. Some moments are worth a photo. Others you'll just want to watch.
Partway through the drive, you stop at one of the park's picnic sites for a short break. After the game drive, your guide takes you to a coffee shop to rest before dropping you back at your hotel or the airport. That view stays with you: wild animals on one side, Nairobi's city towers on the other. Kind of makes you wonder about what “wild” really means.
