The experience
We’d barely left the traffic behind when our guide, Daniel, pointed out the first giraffe. Just standing there, munching in the morning haze. It was strange seeing skyscrapers poking up behind acacia trees. I kept double-checking, was this really Nairobi? The air smelled like grass after rain, and honestly, my shoes were still a bit muddy from yesterday. Daniel laughed when I tried to pronounce “mbuni” (ostrich) right. I probably butchered it, but he didn’t mind.
The 4x4 felt steady as we rolled over ruts and little puddles. We saw zebra herds flicking their tails: one looked straight at us, then went back to chewing. There was this quiet moment when we stopped near some buffalo and you could just hear birds and distant city sounds blending together. I didn’t expect that mix: wild animals so close to Nairobi’s city center. The half-day safari went by faster than I thought. Maybe because every corner had something new: a rhino lumbering past or a flash of color from some bird Daniel named (I forgot already).
Pickup was easy, they found my hotel without fuss, and there was bottled water waiting in the car (which I appreciated more than I thought I would). WiFi worked well enough for me to send a photo to my family while we watched a lioness stretch under the sun. That image is stuck in my head now: her golden fur against the city skyline. Still makes me smile thinking about it.
