The Experience
We got picked up just as the city was waking up—Nairobi’s streets still a little sleepy, but you could already smell charcoal fires somewhere. Our guide, Peter, had this easy laugh and pointed out how the skyline faded behind us as we drove toward the park. I didn’t really expect to see so much green so close to all that traffic. The entrance was busy with monkeys (one tried to steal someone’s snack—honestly, I can’t blame him), and then suddenly it was just open space and that weird mix of city sounds fading into birdsong.
The safari vehicle had this open roof you could stand under—felt a bit silly at first but then you realize it’s perfect for seeing everything. We spotted giraffes almost right away, their heads poking above the acacias like they were curious about us too. Peter slowed down when he saw some buffalo lounging in the mud—he explained how they always stick together, which made me think of my own family back home. At one point I caught a whiff of wild sage when the wind shifted. There was this moment where everything went quiet except for some distant bird calls—I still think about that silence.
It’s strange seeing rhinos with Nairobi’s towers in the background. Kind of surreal but also… fitting? Like two worlds refusing to ignore each other. We took our time whenever someone wanted photos (Peter never rushed us), and he answered every random question—even about bird names I couldn’t pronounce. By the end I was sunburned on my nose and grinning like a kid because honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so far from the city while being right next to it.
