The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the sound — not traffic, but birds. We’d barely left Nairobi’s edge when our guide, Patrick, swung the van through the park gates and suddenly it was all green grass and acacia trees. I was still holding my coffee cup from the hotel. He laughed and said, “You won’t need that now,” just as a group of zebras wandered across the road like they owned it.

I didn’t expect to see a black rhino so close to the city. Patrick handed me binoculars (included — lifesaver for my eyesight) and pointed out a mother grazing with her calf. The air smelled faintly sweet, almost dusty, and there were these little bursts of color everywhere — lilac-breasted rollers flashing past while buffaloes stared back at us like we were the odd ones.
