Step-by-step itinerary
Full day safari at Lake Nakuru
- View Great Rift Valley panorama
- Descend escarpment, see volcanic mountain
- Catch glimpse of Lake Nakuru
- Explore Lake Nakuru National Park wildlife
- Visit smallest chapel in Africa
The experience
Lake Nakuru sits 188 square kilometers across, ringed by woodland, grassland, rocky ridges and lake water: four distinct habitats stacked into one park. The drive down the Great Rift Valley escarpment opens with a panoramic view that frames the whole landscape before you enter it. Your guide-driver navigates the park roads while you watch for the endangered white rhino, lions, leopards, zebra, giraffe, eland and gazelles. The park holds over 400 bird species, and the lesser flamingo is what made it famous.
The 12-hour day starts with hotel pickup in Nairobi and climbs toward the escarpment, passing through countryside villages where you catch glimpses of rural life. Once inside the park, the wildlife drive takes up the bulk of the afternoon. You move at the pace the animals set, stopping when something appears. Extinct volcanic mountains sit on the valley floor as you descend, and the Italian Chapel, the smallest in Africa, was built in 1942 by prisoners of war and sits near the park entrance.
Bottled water comes with you. Bring your own lunch or arrange it separately before the day starts. If you want to get on the water, a boat safari on the lake is optional and added at checkout. The guide speaks English throughout, so the commentary is live and you can ask questions as the day unfolds.
