The experience

The day starts at 5am with pickup from your Nairobi hotel. The drive north takes 2.5 hours, with a stop at the equator crossing near Nanyuki where you can photograph the marker line. From there it's another 15 minutes to the conservancy gate. The first game drive lasts two hours on the northern side of Ol Pejeta, where you'll see the chimpanzee enclosure and other wildlife moving through the vast landscape. By noon you reach Serena Sweetwaters Lodge, positioned to watch animals come to the watering hole in front while you photograph resident monkeys and rest before lunch.

The afternoon game drive begins at 2pm and heads to the eastern side of the conservancy. This is where you encounter Baraka, the blind rhino, and the three northern white rhinos roaming freely in their enclosure: animals you won't see on a standard Maasai Mara safari because they live here under specialized protection. The conservancy employs trained rhino protection squads and works with international veterinary experts to monitor each animal's health. The second drive ends at 4pm, then the return drive to Nairobi takes roughly three hours, with drop-off at your hotel or residence in the CBD around 7pm.

Your guide provides live commentary throughout the day in English or Spanish. Park entrance fees are included in your booking. If you want to visit the chimpanzee sanctuary enclosure, that's an optional add-on at checkout. Lunch at the lodge is available separately at a reduced rate of $40 per person.
