The Experience
“If you see the mountain today, you’re lucky,” Daniel said as he handed us bottled water at 5 a.m., his voice already awake even if mine wasn’t. The van smelled faintly of coffee and dust—Nairobi still half asleep outside. We bumped along the road south, headlights catching a few herders wrapped in bright shukas. I tried not to nod off but honestly, the rhythm of the van almost got me. By the time we rolled into Amboseli, the air had shifted—drier somehow—and there was that huge sky with Kilimanjaro just peeking through some clouds. I didn’t expect it to feel so big.
Our guide pointed out a line of elephants moving slow across the grass. You could hear them—sort of—a low rumble when everything else was quiet except for birds. Daniel explained “Amboseli” means “salty dust” in Maasai, which made sense after I wiped my sunglasses for the third time. We saw zebras and gazelles too, but honestly it was those elephants that got me. There was this one calf flapping its ears at us like it wanted to show off. We stopped at Observation Hill for lunch (I went with the picnic option), sitting on warm rocks with views stretching forever. The wind tasted a bit metallic—maybe from those sulphur springs nearby?
I tried chatting with some Maasai women selling beadwork near the park gate; my Swahili is terrible but they laughed anyway and showed me how they tie their wraps. It felt good just sharing that moment—even if I did butcher every word. On our way back toward Nairobi, Daniel told stories about growing up near here and how the animals always know when rain is coming before people do. The sun dropped behind us and I realized I’d barely looked at my phone all day.
