The experience
You arrive in Amman with a week ahead and no fixed itinerary locked in. The tour starts the next morning with Jerash, one of the ten Decapolis Roman cities and the most well-preserved Roman ruins in the world. You get two hours to walk through it. From there, the route climbs to Ajloun Castle, built on the highest mountain in the region by the Muslim leader Saladin to protect pilgrims heading to Mecca, then descends to Umm Qais, where you can see the Sea of Galilee and part of Nazareth from the ancient Greek settlement.
Day two swings through Amman itself: the Citadel with its Bronze Age walls and Temple of Hercules, the Roman Theater built in the 2nd century for 6,000 people, and then east into the desert to three early Islamic castles (Kharana, Amra and Azraq) each one a different chapter of the region's architectural history. The Kings Way follows, a slower route south through Mount Nebo (where the view stretches to Jerusalem on clear days), the Madaba Mosaic Map in Saint George Church, and down the canyon of Wadi al Mujib before reaching Kerak Castle, a massive Crusader fortress, and Shobak Castle. You arrive in Petra late and stay overnight to explore it fresh the next morning: a full day in the rose-rock canyon where the Nabataean city was carved into the stone over two thousand years ago.
From Petra, the route heads to Wadi Rum, the desert where films like The Martian and Dune were shot, then on to Aqaba on the Red Sea (with time for shopping or snorkeling if you want it) before finishing at the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth and eleven times saltier than the ocean, where your body floats without effort. On the final day, your driver takes you back to Amman or the airport. The whole week runs with private transportation, bottled water, WiFi on board and an air-conditioned vehicle. You choose the start and end points, and if you haven't booked hotels yet, the operator will advise you on the best ones and schedule the days so you have enough time at each place.
