The Experience

Most people fly into Amman and spend the first day figuring out how to get anywhere. You land, your driver is waiting at arrivals, and by afternoon you're standing in the Church of St. George in Madaba looking up at a 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land still intact on the floor. The church has been in continuous use since it was built — no interruption, no restoration break — and the bell tower gives you a view across the whole city. Then Mount Nebo, where the elevation and the clarity of the air mean you can sometimes see all the way to Jerusalem. The Dead Sea comes next, and yeah, you float. The water holds you up without effort. It's strange and it works, and then you're done for the day.

Day two is Petra. You leave the Dead Sea early, the drive winds through landscape that shifts as you go, and then you're inside the canyon with the rose-red facades carved straight into the rock. The scale of it doesn't register until you're standing in front of it. Your driver takes you back to your hotel when you're ready — there's no fixed schedule, no group waiting, no "we leave in ten minutes." You move at your own pace. Petra is Jordan's main draw, and it takes the time it takes.

Wadi Rum is the third piece. The description calls it "Mars on earth" and it's not wrong — the landscape is so far from anything else you've seen that your brain has to work to place it. You get four hours in a 4x4 jeep with a driver who knows the protected area, the rock formations, where the light hits best. After that, you can head back to Amman or the airport, or if your flight allows it, stay for a Bedouin dinner. The whole four-day Jordan tour runs on your schedule, not a fixed itinerary. Your driver speaks English, the vehicle is air-conditioned, and the price is per vehicle, which means if you're traveling with others, the cost splits.
