Sushi cooking class in Osaka: Make three types from scratch
You make your own sushi rice in a wooden tub before rolling a single piece.
A hands-on sushi cooking class in Osaka where you make three types of sushi, yakitori and miso soup under live instruction. You start by preparing sushi rice in your own wooden tub and paddle, then move through rolled eggs, traditional dashi broth, and three finished sushi varieties (nine nigiri, two gunkan-maki and one maki-sushi) before eating what you've made with a seasonal dessert.
The experience
The class runs 2.5 hours and starts with you in an apron, making sushi rice from scratch in a wooden tub and paddle that's yours alone for the session. Your instructor walks through each step, and the high-quality fish is a special order for this class. You'll move from rice straight into the three sushi types: nigiri-sushi, gunkan-maki (boat-shaped sushi), and maki-sushi (rolled). In between, everyone participates together to make rolled eggs for egg sushi using a rectangle-shaped frying pan, then you learn to make traditional Japanese dashi broth and miso soup with fancy-cut vegetables and tofu.
Yakitori, grilled chicken skewers, comes next. You skewer fresh chicken thighs yourself and grill them with a savory sauce as a side dish. All ingredients and kitchen utensils are included, and you get a printed recipe to take home. At the end, you set the table with chopsticks, say "Itadakimasu" (the Japanese phrase before eating), and enjoy the meal you made, finished with a complimentary seasonal dessert.
The class welcomes vegetarians and children from age 7 (with an adult). Your instructor speaks English or Japanese, so you can follow comfortably in whichever language works for you. Public transportation options are available nearby. Let the operator know about any dietary restrictions when you book.
