The experience

The class starts with your instructor demonstrating how to prepare sushi rice and roll sashimi and other fresh fillings into nori the way professionals do it. Then you move to your own station and practice both nigiri (finger sushi) and gunkan (boat-shaped) rolls, working through the techniques and fillings with plenty of repetition. The studio is small and books only people who have reserved a spot, so the group stays manageable and you get real attention while you work.

Once you finish rolling, you gather with the other participants to eat what you've made. Your sushi comes out alongside miso soup, a dashimaki (Japanese omelet), and taiyaki: a fish-shaped waffle that's a popular Japanese street snack. After the meal, the class moves into a matcha tea ceremony where you whisk the powdered green tea yourself, learning the traditional way to prepare it. All ingredients, the meal, green tea and water are included. If you book the sake tasting option, you'll also taste two local sake cups.

The lesson uses no knives for safety, so it's accessible whether you've cooked before or never have. You'll need to arrive on time (the studio enforces a 10-minute grace period before the contract becomes invalid), and you can reach the location by public transportation. Adult pricing applies to everyone except children under 2 years old.

What’s included

  • All ingredients for the sushi rolls.
  • a full meal including miso soup and a Japanese omelet.
  • taiyaki (fish-shaped waffle).
  • a matcha tea ceremony with green tea and water.
  • English-speaking instruction throughout the 2.5-hour class.

Is this one for you?Book this class if you want to learn a skill you can take home, not just watch a demo. The small studio and hands-on practice mean you spend most of the time actually rolling, tasting what you've made, and moving through the tea ceremony: all in one morning or afternoon block.

What exactly do I make and eat in the Osaka sushi class?

How long does the whole class take?

The class runs 2.5 hours from start to finish, including the hands-on rolling, the meal, and the matcha tea ceremony at the end.

Is sake tasting part of the class?

Sake tasting is optional. You can book the sushi lesson alone or add a tasting of two local sake cups at checkout. Both options include all ingredients, the meal, and the matcha ceremony.

What's included in the price?

All ingredients for cooking, the full meal (sushi rolls, miso soup, omelet, waffle and matcha tea), and an English-speaking instructor are included. Gratuities and hotel pickup are not. You'll arrange your own transport to the studio.
