The Experience

We left Montego Bay just after breakfast—windows down, reggae on the radio, our driver (I think his name was Devon?) weaving us through Hopewell. He slowed down near an old church and told us about the English settlers; I barely caught half of it because the sea kept flashing between trees. It’s about 90 minutes to Negril but honestly, it didn’t feel that long. Maybe it was Devon’s stories or maybe I was just staring out at the colors—so much green and blue it almost looked fake.

Seven Mile Beach is…well, bigger than I thought. The sand is almost powdery, not sticky at all, and there’s this salty-sweet smell in the air—coconut oil mixing with fried fish from somewhere nearby. We rented two chairs under a scruffy palm (not included, just so you know) and watched people try parasailing. I chickened out but my friend did it—she came back grinning like she’d seen a ghost. There were jet skis buzzing around and some guys selling fresh fruit—one handed me a slice of mango for free when I tried to say “thank you” in Patois. He laughed so hard he nearly dropped his basket.

Later we headed over to Rick’s Café. The place is loud in a good way—music thumping, people cheering every time someone jumped off that cliff (it really is 30 feet; looks higher when you’re up there). I stood at the edge for ages before finally jumping—the water slapped me awake and I came up sputtering but weirdly proud. We grabbed jerk chicken and Red Stripe while waiting for sunset. When it hit, everything went gold for five minutes—the kind of light that makes you forget your phone for once. There was this DJ playing old reggae tracks and everyone sort of swayed together without talking much.

I still think about that last bit—the hush right after sunset when even the music seemed softer. It felt like everyone was holding their breath for a second before heading back to Montego Bay in the dark, salt still on our skin.
