Step-by-step itinerary

  • Arrive at Rifugio Sapienza
  • Explore Mount Etna craters independently

The Experience

What happens when you drive two hours from Syracuse and suddenly the road curves around a mountain, and there's a town hanging off the edge of it? That's Taormina — and the first thing you do is stop for an arancino, the Sicilian rice ball that tastes nothing like what you'd expect if you've only had the frozen kind. Your guide walks you through the town's narrow streets, and you get why it's been packed with tourists for decades. The cliffs drop straight down to the sea. You have time to eat, wander, take the photo everyone takes.

Then you head inland toward Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, and the landscape changes completely. The air gets cooler as you climb. At Rifugio Sapienza, at 1,900 meters, you step out of the air-conditioned vehicle and the volcano is just there — not a distant shape, but the thing you're standing on. Your guide points out the craters, explains what you're looking at, but then leaves you to explore on your own terms. Some people walk the rim paths, some sit and stare, some take a hundred photos. It's not a rushed stop; there's real time to be here.

The drive back to Syracuse takes the afternoon. If you're traveling with kids or pregnant, this tour doesn't pretend to be something it's not — it's a long day in a vehicle with two main stops, and the operator knows that and has built it around that reality. Snacks are included, which matters when you're in a car for hours. The vehicle is air-conditioned, which also matters in Sicily.
