The Experience

I thought I knew what volcanic rock looked like, but stepping out at Piano Provenzana that morning, it was something else—black earth under my boots, still gritty from last night’s wind. There was a sleepy hush except for the café clinking cups and a couple of guides chatting in Sicilian dialect. Our guide, Carlo, handed me a helmet and grinned, “You’ll need this more than you think.” He pointed out where the old tourist station used to be before the 2002 eruption wiped it out. It’s strange—there are pine trees growing right next to these twisted lava fields, like they’re pretending nothing happened.

The 4x4 ride up Mount Etna’s north slope is bumpier than I expected. You can smell sulfur when the wind shifts, and sometimes it just smells like cold stone. Carlo kept stopping to show us little things: a hawk circling above, or how one lava flow sliced through another decades earlier. The higher we got, the more everything faded into gray and brown—no crowds here, just our small group and this weird silence broken by someone’s nervous laugh (okay, maybe mine). When we finally started trekking from around 2,960 meters up toward the summit craters, I felt that altitude in my legs right away.

The climb is tough but not impossible if you’re reasonably fit—I mean, I’m no athlete and I made it (with some huffing). We passed these huge volcanic bombs scattered like giant breadcrumbs. At one point Carlo stopped us because gas was blowing across the trail; he squinted at the sky and said we’d take a different route “just in case.” There’s something about seeing your breath mix with those little fumarole clouds that makes you feel tiny. At the top—3,380 meters—the view is so wide it almost feels fake. Sicily below looks soft and far away; you can see both seas if it’s clear enough (it wasn’t for us but honestly I didn’t mind).

Coming down was almost fun—sliding through loose scoria channels with black dust getting everywhere (I found some in my socks hours later). My legs were jelly by the time we piled back into the 4x4s for the ride down to Piano Provenzana. Later that night I kept thinking about how quiet it was up there compared to everything else in Sicily. If you want to actually feel Mount Etna instead of just looking at it from afar…well, this is probably how.
