Summary

Climb Mt Etna’s wild upper slopes by cable car & trek past craters

You’ll ride Mt Etna’s cable car and 4x4 bus high above Sicily before trekking across ash fields to Barbagallo Crater at 3000m with a volcanological guide. Feel warm lava underfoot, taste dust on your lips, and watch plumes rise from summit craters. This day trip leaves you awed—and maybe a little humbled—by Etna’s wild side.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest — the first jolt of the cable car on Etna made my stomach drop a little. Maybe it was nerves, or just that weird mix of excitement and “what am I doing up here?” The air got colder as we climbed, and our guide Salvo joked about how Sicilian summer doesn’t mean much above 2500 meters. By the time we switched to the 4x4 bus (which was surprisingly bouncy), I could smell sulfur in the wind — sharp but not overwhelming. It’s hard to describe that color of volcanic rock, somewhere between rust and charcoal, with patches that almost glowed red in the morning light.

We started trekking from around 2850 meters. The ground felt gritty under my boots — they lend you shoes if you need them, which is good because I definitely did. We stopped often for Salvo’s stories about old eruptions and local legends (he swears he saw a fox up there once, but no one else did). At the Barbagallo craters near 3000 meters, I caught myself just staring at the summit craters — there was this steady plume of gas puffing out like a signal. You could see all the way to Taormina and even Syracuse on a clear day; honestly, it makes Sicily look smaller than you’d think from down below.

The path along those extinct vents felt almost lunar. At one point we ducked into a channel left by the 2002 eruption — still faintly warm in spots, which freaked me out for half a second until Salvo grinned and said it was “Etna’s way of saying hello.” Lunch was quick (no fancy picnic here), but eating bread with hands still dusty from lava sand just hit different. On our way down toward Montagnola, someone slipped and laughed so hard she had tears in her eyes — volcanic sand is sneakier than it looks.

I keep thinking about that silence up there. Not really quiet, more like… heavy with wind and distant rumbles you feel more than hear. On the cable car back down I tried to memorize every weird shape in the Valle del Bove before it all got swallowed by clouds again. If you’re looking for a polished walk in nature, this isn’t it — but if you want to feel tiny next to something ancient and unpredictable, well…
