The experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell: kind of sharp, like burnt earth mixed with wildflowers. We’d barely left Catania when our guide, Marco, started pointing out old lava flows streaking down the side of Mount Etna. He joked that you can tell how old each one is by the color. Some are jet black, some already covered in green. I tried to remember which was which but honestly got distracted by the way the clouds kept shifting over the summit. It felt like we were sneaking up on something alive.

We hiked up to about 2000 meters (which sounds high, but it’s a slow climb), stopping every so often while Marco told us stories about eruptions and little tricks for spotting fox tracks in the ash. The ground was crunchy under my boots, volcanic gravel, and sometimes you’d get this puff of warm air from cracks in the rock. At one point he handed me a tiny wild strawberry and said “taste this: Etna makes everything sweeter.” He wasn’t wrong.

I didn’t expect to go inside a lava cave, but there we were: helmets on, torches flickering against walls that looked almost glassy. It was colder than outside and so quiet you could hear water dripping somewhere deep inside. My friend tried to say “stalactite” in Italian and our group just started laughing (even Marco). Afterward we walked through thick green patches (ferns, chestnut trees), and suddenly the whole Valle del Bove opened up below us. It’s huge. Sort of lunar but also full of life at the edges. I still think about how small I felt standing there.
