itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Jeep tour and Etna excursions

  • Meet at the parking and breakfast
  • Drive to 1992 lava flow and walk
  • Visit panoramic Valle del Bove viewpoint
  • Off-road drive higher to 2000 meters
  • Walk around the volcano area
  • Enter lava flow tunnel with safety gear
  • Taste typical Etna products in Zafferana

I hopped into the back seat of the jeep at the meeting point near Catania, still rubbing sleep from my eyes. Our guide, Salvo, had that kind of easy way about him—he pointed out where to grab an espresso before we set off (I did, and honestly, I needed it). The morning air smelled faintly like ash and pine needles as we bounced up Etna’s lower slopes. I didn’t expect the landscape to change so quickly—one minute there were chestnut trees, then suddenly it was all black rock and silence except for our tires crunching over old lava.

We stopped right above what Salvo called the “sciara”—the long lava flow from 1992. Walking on it felt weirdly springy under my boots, almost like walking on burnt toast. He showed us where the eruption had cut through old trails; you could see wildflowers poking through cracks. At Valle del Bove, he let us just stand there for a while. The view is… well, I still think about that emptiness and how small we looked compared to those cliffs. Some folks took photos; I just stared.

After another off-road stretch (my teeth are still rattling), we got out near 2,000 meters and circled a smaller crater. The wind was sharp up there—someone’s hat blew off and everyone laughed. Then came the part I was nervous about: helmets on, torches in hand, we ducked into a lava tunnel. It was cool inside and smelled damp and earthy; our lights made weird shadows on the walls. Salvo told us stories about smugglers hiding here once—who knows if that’s true but it fit the mood.

On the way back down we stopped at this honey place in Zafferana—oldest producer around apparently—and tried pistachio cream with bread (don’t judge me but I went back for seconds). My shoes were dusty and my head full of new facts about Etna eruptions. If you’re after something polished or easygoing… maybe not this day trip from Catania to Mount Etna. But if you want to feel like you’ve actually been somewhere wild—yeah, this is it.
