The experience

How do you see the inside of a volcano and stand at its craters in a single morning? The tour starts at the lava flows that destroyed villages centuries ago, then climbs by 4X4 jeep into the high slopes. You'll cross off-road terrain, stop at a volcanic cave equipped with helmets and torches so you can walk inside the lava tube, and reach the Valle del Bove (a massive depression carved into Etna's east face) from a lookout point. The guides explain what you're seeing as you go: how the volcano shaped the landscape, which flows came when, why the craters sit where they do.

The trek around the Silvestri Craters happens at altitude, among the 300-plus extinct lateral craters that ring Mount Etna.
